FAQs

What is a tap and shower set?

A tap and shower set (often called a bath shower mixer) is an all-in-one bathroom fixture that combines a faucet and a showerhead. It lets you blend hot and cold water to fill the tub or switch it through a hose and handset for showering.

These sets provide a convenient, space-saving solution for bathrooms where space needs to be maximized.

Key Components

The Mixer Tap: The central faucet that mixes hot and cold water to your desired temperature.
The Diverter: A small knob or lever that directs the flow of water from the main tap spout to the showerhead.
The Shower Kit: Usually includes a flexible hose, a handheld shower handset, and a wall bracket or riser rail to hold it in place.

What is the difference between a bath shower mixer tap and a standard bath tap?

A bath shower mixer tap combines a standard bath filler with a handheld showerhead attachment, allowing you to easily switch between filling the tub and taking a shower. In contrast, a standard bath tap (or pillar tap) typically consists of two separate taps for hot and cold water that only fill the tub.

Key Differences at a Glance

Feature	Bath Shower Mixer	Standard Bath Tap (Pillar Taps)
Water Flow	Hot and cold water are mixed inside the tap, flowing out of a single spout.	Two separate spouts/valves; you manually control the hot and cold streams.
Shower Capability	Includes an integrated hose and showerhead, usually mounted on a cradle.	No shower capability.
Temperature Control	Easier to achieve your perfect temperature because the water mixes before coming out.	Requires you to constantly fiddle with both taps to find the right balance.
Family Versatility	Highly versatile for rinsing hair, washing pets, or cleaning the tub.	Strictly for drawing a bath.
Mounting	Usually requires 2 tap holes (deck-mounted) but can be floor-mounted for freestanding tubs.	Always requires 2 tap holes.

Are tap and shower sets suitable for all baths?

No, tap and shower sets are not suitable for all baths. Your bath's structural layout, material, and your home's water pressure dictate which set will work.

Do tap and shower sets work with low water pressure?

Yes, tap and shower sets will work with low water pressure, but you must choose a set specifically rated for low pressure. Standard or high-pressure mixer sets will only produce a weak, frustrating trickle if installed on a low-pressure water system.

How to Make It Work Successfully

Check the Manufacturer's Bar Rating: Look for tap and shower sets explicitly labelled as "low pressure" or "suitable for gravity-fed systems". These fixtures will feature a minimum operating pressure rating of 0.1 bar or 0.2 bar.
Look for High-Flow Engineering: Low-pressure sets, such as the Tailored Low-Pressure Mixer from Bathroom Point or certain models from B&Q or Screwfix, feature wider internal water channels and specialized valves. This design allows more water to pass through using only the natural force of gravity, ensuring a decent flow rate.
Avoid Complex Multi-Function Showerheads: High-pressure systems are required to push water through showerheads with many massage spray settings or large rainfall designs. For low pressure, stick to a basic, single-spray handheld showerhead or an eco-flow model designed to restrict air and maximize water velocity.

What finishes are available for tap and shower sets?

Tap and shower sets are available in a wide variety of finishes, ranging from traditional high-shine options to ultra-modern matte and textured metallic looks.

The Most Common Finishes

Polished Chrome: The most popular and traditional choice. It features a highly reflective, mirror-like surface that is incredibly durable, affordable, and easy to clean, though it shows watermarks and fingerprints easily.
Matt Black: A highly sought-after contemporary finish. It delivers a bold, minimalist look that resists fingerprint marks, though it can show limescale buildup more visibly in hard-water areas.
Brushed Brass / Gold: Provides a warm, luxury aesthetic. The brushed texture softens the metallic glare and helps mask water spots, making it popular for both modern and traditional "vintage" bathroom designs.
Gunmetal / Brushed Nickel: A darker, moody alternative to chrome or steel. It has an industrial, smoky-grey hue with a brushed texture that is exceptional at hiding smudges and water blemishes.
Rose Gold / Copper: A unique boutique finish that adds a warm, distinctively premium edge to custom bathroom installations.

Can I replace existing bath taps with a tap and shower set?

Yes, you can absolutely replace standard bath taps with a tap and shower set. This is one of the most common bathroom upgrades, but whether it is a quick DIY swap or requires professional plumbing depends on your current setup.

Are tap and shower sets easy to clean?

Yes, tap and shower sets are easy to clean, but the effort required depends heavily on the finish you choose and your local water type.

Best Cleaning Practices

To keep the set looking new without damaging the finish:

Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Never use abrasive scouring pads, bleach, or harsh chemical spray cleaners. These can permanently strip or scratch specialized coatings (especially matt black and brushed brass).
The Gentle Method: Use a simple mix of warm water and mild dish soap with a soft cloth.
Tackling Limescale: For stubborn hard water stains, use a diluted mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water. Rinse it off thoroughly after a few minutes so the mild acid doesn't damage the plating.
