Shower Head

FAQs

What is the best type of shower head?

The best type of shower head depends entirely on your plumbing setup and your personal preferences. If you want ultimate flexibility and easy cleaning, a handheld shower head is your best option. However, if your goal is an immersive, spa-like experience and you have strong water pressure, a ceiling-mounted rain shower head is the ideal choice.

Do shower heads fit all showers?

Most shower heads use standard UK connection sizes, making them compatible with the majority of shower hoses and shower arms. Always check product specifications before installation.

What is a rainfall shower head?

A rainfall shower head is an oversized, wide fixture designed to suspend directly overhead and mimic the gentle, vertical flow of natural rain.

Unlike standard shower heads that blast concentrated, high-pressure water at an angle, rain heads distribute water evenly across a large surface area. This creates a full-body drenching experience rather than a piercing stream. They are typically between 8 to 20 inches in diameter and come in both round and square designs.

How do I stop limescale building up on a shower head?

To stop limescale from building up on your shower head, you need to prevent minerals from drying on the surface and dissolve early deposits before they harden. Limescale forms when hard water evaporates, leaving calcium and magnesium minerals behind.

The best prevention strategies range from daily habits to permanent plumbing fixes.

• Wipe it dry: Keep a small microfibre cloth in the bathroom. Wipe down the shower head after the last use of the day to remove surface water before it evaporates and leaves mineral crystals.

• Rub the nozzles: If your shower head has flexible, rubberised nozzles, rub your thumb firmly across them once a week while the water is running. This simple action breaks up tiny, soft mineral deposits before they can crystallise and clog the holes.

• Lower the water temperature: Set your home boiler to a slightly lower temperature. Hotter water increases kinetic energy, causing faster mineral precipitation and accelerated limescale formation.

Are high-pressure shower heads suitable for low water pressure?

Yes, high-pressure shower heads are specifically designed to fix low water pressure issues. While a shower head cannot change the actual plumbing pressure of your house, it alters how the water is delivered to create a much stronger, faster, and more forceful stream.

They act similarly to placing your thumb over the end of a garden hose—by narrowing the exit space, the water is forced out with significantly more speed and power.

What is the difference between a fixed and handheld shower head?

The main difference is mobility: a fixed shower head stays attached to the wall or ceiling for hands-free washing, while a handheld shower head connects to a flexible hose, allowing you to lift it off the mount to direct the water spray anywhere you need.

Choosing between them impacts your daily comfort, cleaning routine, and installation complexity.

• Fixed: These are screwed directly onto a rigid metal arm coming out of the wall or ceiling. They stay in a single position, though the head itself usually sits on a swivel ball joint that allows you to tilt the spray angle slightly.

• Handheld: These sit in a bracket mounted to the wall or on a sliding rail. They connect to the water supply via a flexible metal or plastic hose (usually 1.5 to 2 metres long), allowing you to detach the unit and move it around freely.

How often should a shower head be replaced?

A shower head should be replaced when performance declines, limescale becomes difficult to remove, or visible wear affects water flow and spray distribution. High-quality shower heads can last for many years with proper maintenance.

Are shower heads easy to install?

Most shower heads are designed for simple installation and can usually be fitted without specialist tools by connecting directly to an existing shower hose, arm, or outlet.
