What Is A Small Toilet?

A small toilet is a compact pan that projects less from the wall than a standard toilet, made for cloakrooms, en-suites and tight bathrooms. The ones here are wall hung or back to wall, which means the cistern sits inside the wall or a unit rather than behind the pan.

What Size Is Classed As A Small Toilet?

A small toilet is usually one with a projection under around 500mm, compared with 600mm or more on a standard pan. Check the projection figure against the depth of your cloakroom, and allow roughly 600mm of clear space in front so it's comfortable to use.

Are Small Toilets Good For A Cloakroom?

Small toilets are exactly what a cloakroom needs, since the shorter projection leaves room for the door to open and for someone to stand at the basin. Wall hung models help even more, because the clear floor underneath makes a narrow room feel more open.

Wall Hung Or Back To Wall, Which Small Toilet Is Better?

A wall hung small toilet has nothing touching the floor, so the room looks bigger and you can clean straight underneath. A back to wall small toilet sits on the floor against a wall or furniture unit, which is simpler and usually cheaper to have fitted.

Do Small Toilets Have A Weaker Flush?

No. Small toilets use the same concealed cistern capacity and flush system as full-size pans, and the rimless design spreads water evenly around the bowl. The size saving is in the projection, not in flushing performance.

Are Small Toilets Comfortable To Sit On?

Small toilets reduce how far the pan sticks out rather than cutting the seat height or bowl size, so they're comfortable for everyday use. With a wall hung model you can also set the mounting height to suit whoever uses it most.

Do Small Toilets Need A Concealed Cistern?

Yes. Both wall hung and back to wall small toilets are built to pair with a concealed cistern, hidden inside a stud wall, a support frame or a furniture unit, with only the flush plate on show. That's what allows the compact footprint.

How to Choose Small Toilets for Your Bathroom?

To choose small toilets for your bathroom, measure your available depth and width first, allowing clearance in front and for the door to swing. Then decide whether wall hung is worth the extra fitting work for the floor space it frees up, pick a finish that matches your basin and taps, and check with your plumber where the concealed cistern can go.
