What is a high rise basin tap?

A high rise basin tap (also commonly known as a tall basin mixer or countertop tap) is an extended, extra-tall faucet designed specifically to be used with freestanding countertop basins or vessel sinks. Because countertop bowls sit entirely on top of a vanity unit or worktop, standard-sized taps are too short to clear the rim. High rise taps provide the necessary height and spout projection to reach over the top of the bowl safely and comfortably.

Do I need a high rise basin tap for a countertop basin?

Yes, you almost always need a high-rise basin tap for a countertop basin, unless you choose a wall-mounted tap instead. Standard taps are too short to clear the high rim of a sit-on vessel sink. 

Your Two Main Options

• High-Rise Tap: Mounted on the worktop, standing tall enough to pour water over the sink rim.

• Wall-Mounted Tap: Installed into the wall above the sink, keeping the countertop completely clear. 

The Only Exceptions

You will not need a high-rise tap if:

• Your countertop basin has a built-in tap hole on its own rim.

• Your basin is semi-recessed, meaning it sits halfway down into the furniture. 

What is the difference between a standard and high rise basin tap?

The main difference is height and where they are installed. Standard taps fit directly onto a sink, while high-rise taps sit on the countertop next to a tall bowl.

• Height: Standard taps are short (usually 100mm–150mm). High-rise taps are tall (usually 250mm–350mm). 

• Mounting: Standard taps mount into holes pre-drilled on the sink rim. High-rise taps mount directly into the wooden or stone countertop. 

• Basin Type: Standard taps pair with traditional, under-mount, or drop-in sinks. High-rise taps pair exclusively with freestanding vessel bowls. 

• Reach: High-rise taps have a longer spout projection to reach over the thick rim of a countertop bowl. 

Are high rise basin taps suitable for all basins?

No. High rise basin taps are best suited to countertop and vessel basins. Using a high rise tap with a standard basin may cause excessive splashing.

High-rise basin taps are available in a wide variety of visual options, ranging from polished, high-shine surfaces to muted, textured metallics. Choosing the right coating heavily influences the overall atmosphere of a bathroom design.

Do high rise basin taps work with low water pressure?

Yes, high-rise basin taps can work with low water pressure, but you must explicitly choose a model rated for low-pressure systems. Because water has to travel a greater distance up the elongated body of a tall tap, standard high-rise taps often require a high-pressure system to deliver an acceptable flow rate. If you install a high-pressure tap into a low-pressure plumbing system, the water will merely trickle out, resulting in poor functionality.

Are high rise basin taps easy to install?

Yes, high-rise basin taps are relatively easy to install and generally follow the same basic steps as installing a standard deck-mounted tap. However, they are much easier to install than wall-mounted taps, which require tearing open the wall, routing pipework behind the tiles, and precise structural alignment.

How do I choose the right high rise basin tap?

Consider the height of the basin, spout projection, water pressure compatibility, finish, and overall bathroom style. The tap spout should align comfortably with the centre of the basin to minimise splashing and improve usability.
