Thermostatic Shower Valves

What Is A Thermostatic Shower Valve?

A thermostatic shower valve is the control unit that mixes hot and cold water and holds it at a set temperature automatically. It contains a temperature-sensitive element that reacts instantly to pressure changes elsewhere in your plumbing, so your shower stays steady rather than swinging hot or cold.

How Many Outlets Do I Need On A Thermostatic Shower Valve?

Outlets are how many separate water feeds the valve can run. One outlet suits a single shower head, two outlets let you run a fixed head plus a handset, and three outlets suit a shower with a head, handset, and body jets. Pick based on what your shower setup actually includes, since paying for extra outlets you won't use is wasted money.

What's The Difference Between A Thermostatic And A Manual Shower Valve?

A manual valve mixes hot and cold in a fixed ratio, so any change in water pressure changes your shower temperature. A thermostatic valve corrects for that automatically, keeping the water where you set it. That temperature control is also the reason thermostatic valves are considered safer, especially in homes with children or elderly users.

Do I Need A Plumber To Fit A Thermostatic Shower Valve?

Yes. These are concealed valves that connect into your hot and cold supply pipework behind the wall, which involves cutting into tiling or plasterboard. A plumber will also confirm your home's water pressure is compatible before fitting.

Should I Choose A Round, Square Or Traditional Shower Valve?

All three work identically inside, so the shape is purely about matching your bathroom. Round suits a softer, contemporary look, square fits sharper modern tiling and fittings, and traditional styles with cross-head handles suit period or classic bathrooms.

Which Finish Should I Choose For A Thermostatic Shower Valve?

Chrome is the most common and easiest to match with existing fittings. Matt black and brushed gunmetal suit modern schemes, while brushed brass, copper, nickel, and English gold give a warmer, more characterful look. Matching the valve finish to your taps and shower head keeps everything looking coordinated.

Will A Thermostatic Valve Work With My Water Pressure?

Thermostatic valves have a minimum pressure requirement to work properly, so a low-pressure gravity-fed system may need a pump or a valve rated for low pressure. Your plumber can check your system's pressure before you buy and confirm which valve suits it.
