A new bathroom is an exciting project – it starts off with choosing the basic items, including the bath, the basin, the shower and the furniture. Then, as if that’s not satisfying enough, along comes the next best bit – decorating the new room! Here are our best tips on how to decorate a bathroom…
1 – Pick a Furniture Colour
It’s a good idea to start off with a firm concept of the colour scheme you’re aiming for. Easy choices are black and white, all-white, white and chrome etc. However, picking a strong focal point colour right at the start of the project gives a good focus to the entire scheme. Choose just one item of furniture in a strong colour choice to get your bathroom project going in a positive direction. Our perfect example here is the Corsica Midnight Green Wall Hung Drawer Vanity Unit– which also looks gorgeous with a lush parlour palm.

2 – Choose a Wall Colour
Basing your new bathroom around a particular wall colour is a simple interior design approach that leaves plenty of room for future colour scheme changes as a new coat of paint won’t break the bank if you change your mind in a year! We love this choice of pale pink for this elegant bathroom – accessorised with black fittings and white and gold lighting. Here, our Newham Freestanding bath is teamed with the Trent Matt Black Freestanding Bath Shower Mixer Tap.

3 – Select Brilliant Tiles
A fully tiled bathroom or shower room needs a very positive approach – you will definitely have to love those tiles, so take time when you’re choosing them. A timeless and classic approach is to go for a marble-look porcelain design and choose one that is suitable for both walls and floors for a seamless, elegant look. All-over marble creates a beautiful background for sleek shower fitting and beautiful furniture, as demonstrated here. Try Carrera White Marble Effect Polished Porcelain wall and floor tiles from our sister company Tile Mountain.

4 – Get a Great Floor
A patterned floor can bring the whole scheme together, particularly if the colours in the pattern are repeated for the furniture and walls. Some designers will start their colour scheme with the tiles, others will look for tiles containing those colours to ‘wrap up’ the scheme. Either way, an eye-catching floor will create a great focal point. Porcelain tiles are tough, hardwearing and easy to keep clean too – a quick spray and mop is all that’s needed. These are Mr Jones Grey Pattern Matt Porcelain wall and floor tiles from Tile Mountain.

5 – Add Stylish Blinds
There’s always the question of what to do with the windows in any bathroom scheme. The best advice is to avoid fabrics wherever possible and to choose blinds and shutters. The trend for dark-framed windows, whether painted or UPVC, looks bold and positive, and can be enhanced with a choice of matching Venetian blinds. Perfect for privacy whilst adding a gentle filtered light to the room, depending on which way they are dipped.

6 – Try Some Panelling
Create a luxury bathroom-retreat style room with some panelling as a design detail. It can be used for a whole wall, below a dado-height rail or perhaps for just a small alcove. Wherever it’s used modern vertical ribbed panelling will definitely add a luxury hotel-style vibe to your new bathroom. Team it with a freestanding bath or floor-standing taps for a super-luxe look. Here, our Lea design freestanding bath shower mixer in polished chrome stands out beautifully against dark panelling.

7 – Include an Eye-Catching Radiator or Towel Rail
The perfect bathroom retreat needs to be warm and comfortable, so every bathroom scheme needs an efficient radiator or heated towel rail. Don’t settle for a boring everyday design, design something in keeping with the overall style of your home. Go modern or traditional to create your perfect scheme. A traditional roll-top bath can be teamed with a classic heated towel rail. Add panelling and elegant skirting boards for authentic finishing touches. Shown here, our Gibraltar design sets the scene.

8 – The Perfect Result
Consider all our tips and advice for creating your best bathroom retreat… Think about mixing and matching old and new styles, contemporary and traditional looks, and dark and light colours. This bathroom blends traditionally proportioned panelling with modern artwork and features a traditional roll-top bath sitting next to a modern stool. And it’s all finished off with porcelain wood effect floor tiles. It’s definitely a great example of how to decorate a bathroom with style and pizazz, mixing traditional and modern to great effect.
