On Trend: Traditional Bathroom Ideas

Traditionally styled bathrooms are very much on-trend, with many homes combining traditional and contemporary looks. Think of homes with a super-modern conservatory extension added on to a Victorian terraced house – which can still embrace traditional and period-style looks for the bathrooms and hallway, for example. Here’s our top roundup of some traditional bathroom ideas that will add that glamorous touch of period style to any home.

1- Choose a Traditional Style Vanity Unit

A traditional style vanity unit is an important way of emphasising a classic bathroom look, reminiscent of an old-fashioned washstand, but with all the mod-cons! Single vanity units are available, of course, but in a shared family bathroom- or indeed in the main en-suite bathroom- a double version is a delight and will definitely add a sophisticated look. Choose classic colours to get that traditional look spot-on.

2- A Traditional Column Radiator

An efficient radiator is a must-have for any bathroom, and a traditionally styled column towel radiator will do the job admirably, whilst fitting in perfectly to a period-style theme. Other ways of emphasising that traditional style includes a roll-top freestanding bath–such as the Grosvenor 1700mm with black or white claw feet, and black and white floor tiles. Clever use of wall panelling to disguise pipes and fittings is another good design choice.

3- A Roll-Top Bath is the Epitome of Traditional Bathroom Style

One of the best ways of creating a traditional-style bathroom is to include a free-standing roll-top tub. Claw (or ball) feet add that extra touch of authentic style, and the Bathroom Mountain range includes black, white, chrome and grey options. When designing the layout of the room, try and include space all around the bath, setting it forward from the wall to get a feeling of space. It doesn’t have to be much–just a few inches will do.

4- A Space-Saving Layout

When you need to find space for a radiator as well as a vanity unit, look upwards and choose a tall, thin (1800mm h) radiator to maximise wall space. This layout idea is perfect if you’re just adding a vanity unit to a bedroom, or for a full bathroom. Don’t forget to sort out the wiring for wall lights when all the plumbing requirements for basin and radiator are being planned! Our Lucia vanity cabinets also come in Inky Blue and Chalk white, as well as Graphite Grey as shown here.

5- A Perfectly Elegant Slipper Bath

A slipper bath with a plinth-style design, so it sits directly on the floor, is a classic tub choice, and the raised ends add an elegant look to the bathroom. Floor standing taps are another classic choice, whether in chrome or gold finish. These are Bathroom Mountain’s Sherbourne Traditional Chrome Freestanding Bath Shower Mixer taps, with ceramic disc cartridge for long lasting reliability. The slipper bath also comes in Graphite Grey external finish.

6- Simple, Traditional Basin Taps

Not all traditionally-styled bathroom taps are typical ‘cross-head’ types. Lever-style were also very often seen in traditional bathrooms, and can be easier to operate for anyone who has difficulty with their grip. These are from our Cherwell range, which also includes a Bath-Shower Mixer deck mounted set. Another good, polished chrome choice for an en-suite bathroom or a cloakroom. Once again, ceramic disc technology ensures longevity.

7- A Shower Mixer is a Must Have

Although a simple set of hot and cold bath taps is a traditional choice, its always worth considering a bath-shower mixer. Especially if the bathroom is going to be used by children – the shower head us a real advantage for hair-washing, and also, for rinsing out the bath and cleaning everything down after a splashy bath-time. The taps and the diverter are lever operated here in our Cherwell design, which has impeccable classic good looks.

8- Stunning Storage

Don’t forget that every bathroom needs ample storage if it’s to stay looking neat and tidy. A classically styled vanity provides enough space for a stack of towels, extra loo rolls, and lots of toiletries. Sit on counter-top basins allow for one or two accessories, such as the toothbrush and water glasses, to stand on the counter top too. Keep to the traditional theme with the matching soap dish, towel rails and robe hooks from our Eleanor Accessory Set.
